First Reserve
of the Biosphere recognized in Cuba by the
MAB Program of UNESCO. It covers the eastern
half of Cordillera de Guaniguanico, in the
province of Pinar del Río, and among
its most attractive landscapes there are
two relevant tourist landscapes, Soroa and
Las Terrazas. |
|
|
|
Soroa
is a beautiful place located 70 km
west of the capital of the country. Soroa
boasts a rich flora, favored by the high
rate of rain in the region, where one can
observe a considerable variety of species
of trees, bushe, wild orchids, and ferns
in the woods. In the region you can find
the Soroa waterfalls, one of the highest
and most beautiful i the Cuban western region,
and the largest orchid nursery in the country
with more than 250 species, among endemic
and imported. |
|
Soroa
also boasts historic and cultural values
revealed by the ruins of former French coffee
plantations and their mansions, belonging
to the first half of the 19th century, and
some remains of aborigial settlements. Horseback
riding is available as well as hiking and
trekking with the help of specialized guides
to places like Sierra Derrumbada, the ruins
of French coffee plantations, Bayate river
and El Brujito-La Comadre peasants
community. |

|
Las
Terrazas covers a natural area of
around 5,000 ha, where a successful project
of sustainable rural economy is taking place,
based in the rational tourist exploitation
of the natural wealth, by means of a controlled
and benefiting echange for the environment
and the existing population. This area boasts
numerous landscaping values, where mountain
ranges and narrow valleys, crisscrossed
by rivers and springs, with beautiful waterfalls,
mix themselves with exuberant evergreen
forests. |
|
The natural
beauty of the region makes it attractive
for cycling and mountaineering. Hikers can
take walks along the Manantiales river,
have a swim in the Love Pool and enjoy under
the 20-meter-high, crystal-clear waterfall.
There, at certain times of the day, the
sun passing through the water spray forms
a small rainbow, giving Soroa the name of
Cubas Rainbow. |
