Introduction

Trinidad, in Sancti Spiritus province, is unique in Cuba because it is execptionally well preserved and its colonial architecture is a feast for the eyes. The richness of the architecture reflects the fact taht once it was a wealthy city known for its trade in gold, sugar and slaves. The lovely cobblestone streets and the beautifully painted houses are a living museum and the 20th century has left the city untouched.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site,the museums housing historic collections are fascinating in their own right as many are old colonial mansions. The most visited sites are the Main Square, the Parroquial Mayor (Parish Church), the Romantic Museum at Brunet Palace, the Santísima Trinidad Church, La Canchánchara Cafe, the Colonial restaurant, the Museum of Architecture, a restaurant at the Old Jailhouse and Casa de la Trova.

Less than 400 meters away from the colonial quarters, on the slopes and top of a hill, lies Horizontes Las Cuevas Hotel. Guests can take in a view of the whole city and a beautiful coastal landscape of the Caribbean Sea and the Escambray mountain range. Its famed Ayala Disco, set inside a cave, lures down both hotel guests and Trinidad youths, with its dazzling light and sound effects on the natural cave environment. Trinidad is perfectly located to explore the beautiful, wooded Escambray mountains with crystal clear pools at the foot of waterfalls, coffee plantations and exotic birdlife including humming birds.

From Las Cuevas, visitors can take daily excursions to Ancón Beach and the Valley of Sugarmills-also a part of mankind’s cultural heritage since it was the world’s largest canesugar-producing center in the 17th century. The ruins of many of the 600 sugarmills that existed in the valley 200 years ago are strewn over this area. White sandy beaches at La Boca and Playa Ancon with turquoise seas complete an incledibly picturesque area of Cuba.

As a result of the high concentration of black slaves in the area, a tall tower was built in the middle of the valley to watch for fires in cane plantations and raise the alarm over possible slave uprisings. The Iznaga Tower and the old sugarmill premises, now fully restored, are a favorite attraction among visitors.
