Introduction

Reserve of the Biosphere and National Park. Its ecosystem is biologically diverse, and with a high degree of endemism, making of it an important corridor for migrating species. Guanahacabibes Peninsula owns its origin to a series of shorelines that emerged due to the sea waves and sedimentation taken ashore mainly because of the action of the Gulf Current and its Counter-current. Is located in the westernmost part of Cuba.

The park has significant species of reptile, mollusks, mammals and an abundant bird population with more than 140 species. Besited an assorted fauna, it also boast a scenery showing significant features: the so-called Balcones de Guanahacabibes, with peculiar architecture formed by the action of the sea and the geotectonic elevation produced along thousands of years.

Balcones de Guanahacabibes strch along 28 km, and their highest elevation - around 13 meters - is the spot called as Subida de la Peña, with caves and log sbeds. In the park you can find a known guiding loght surrounded of stories and legends. Roncalliguiding light, is used as a point of reference in westernmost end of the country, very close to Las Tumbas beach.

Other natural values of the area are its numerous caves and water reservoirs in the caves, some with endemic species only found in this part of the country, and the small but interesting internal marsbes. Amid this beautiful place is located the International Diving Center “María la Gorda”, ideal place for both, beginners and experienced divers. The morphology of the bottom is an enchanting picture with long extensions of white sand with funny patches and round reef formations.

The sea bottom in this area has the most clear and colorful contrasts for the practice of sub aquatic photography since the transparency of the water allows a visibility of 30 m long up to 30m of depth; the medium water temperature varies between 24 C in December and February to 30 C in August. The marine platform is very thin and ends very close from the coast with depths between 200m and 1000m.
